🦙 Hold My Espresso—There’s a Llama Race at the Fairgrounds! :)

Confessions of a First-Time Llama Racer (Spectator)

Okay, full disclosure: today I learned llamas could race. Not just hike, or pose for yoga selfies — actually race. On a dirt track. In costumes. With kids leading them. Welcome to Westcliffe, Colorado, y’all. 🎉

📍 Custer County Fairgrounds

📅 Saturday, July 12, 2025 | 🕓 4 PM Show | 🏁 7 PM Race

I’ll be front row at the 3rd Annual Llama Race at the Custer County Fairgrounds, asking deep, meaningful questions like:

👉 Do llamas stretch before a race?

👉 Is there a betting pool?

👉 Can I adopt one?

🦙 Llamas: Not Just Fluffy Alpacas

For the record, llamas are not just bougie alpacas. They’re ancient Andean athletes who’ve been carrying loads (and looking fabulous doing it) for over 5,000 years. These majestic floofs are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and — in rare cases — Olympic-level racing skills.

Saturday’s schedule?

🕓 4:00 PM – Llama Show: Basically a fashion show meets 4-H pride.

🏁 7:00 PM – Llama Race: Fur will fly. Kids will cheer. And I will probably cry from laughing.

🧑‍🌾 Who’s Putting This On?

The legends behind the madness are the Wet Mountain Hermits 4-H Club — teaching local youth responsibility, livestock handling, and how to wrangle a llama in front of a roaring crowd.

🗺️ Where It’s Happening

🚜 Why You Should Go

  • It’s hilarious

  • It’s wholesome

  • It supports an amazing youth program

  • And it’s peak mountain town content you’ll be talking about until Christmas

So if you’re new to llama culture (like me), come get initiated. There’s no secret handshake — just lots of love, laughter, and maybe a little spit (from the llamas, not the kids).

📸 And yes, I will be filming this. Because llamas. 🦙 Racing. 🏎️
